Wood Veneer Blade skins [aka foam/tyvek ]

I started a new thread because the foam tyvek thread/post was evolving. So the latest on the wood veneer over the rib formers to make a hollow wing experiment. The bamboo veneer is much stronger and bends to form the LE much nicer. I chose to try the maple veneer because it was cheaper. First try on bendin...

My test run was less than satisfactory today but I won't give up. 75 watts max in probably about 12 -15 mph winds. She is built to run loose and the belt just has to be too tight I think to not slip. Gonna try to reduce the gear ratio some more and maybe change from a 16 AWG stator to an 18 AWG stator I guess and...

Number of coil turns - what is the formulae??

Hi everyone, this is my first time post to the forum. Can anyone tell me if there is a formula to calculate the number of turns required for a copper coil? I've just bought a roll of 19 AWG enameled copper wire - does the number of coil turns depend on the size of the magnets used? I was thinking of buying 12 ne...

I completed fabricating a new VAWT. I still need to attach the PMA. I will first try direct drive and if that proofs not to provide enough RPMs it can easily be configure with a pulley and belt drive. The proto-type shows the hub needs a lot of improvement and I still need to add alignment braces to the top a...

Some fun footage from today. A huge State sized storm with many super cells passed through last night. 50-80 mph winds on the squall line. The VAWT did fine, but power out / trees down. Note how with this design there is no inward lift force. The lower wings have only outward force support. The radi...

I moved this build to a thread with a slightly more descriptive title. The 035 refers to the turbine area: 0.35 m^2. I just got a 3-D printed part from Ponoko; pretty exciting. Going after low vs. high wind
(Preview)
This video got me thinking. The water pumping windmill found on many old farms was successful because it used low but consistent winds. I wonder if it would be more wise to build a large, high torque VAWT like a Lenz2 that would provide good energy in say 4 to 6 m/s winds and "furl" it when the...

Well, after a year of doing not much I finally got my d-hawt turned into a dvawt. So I built a small tower and set the turbi...

VAWT Wind Powered Sump Pump

Since when you live without city water pressure and have a high water table, a basement sump pump is a neccesity. If power goes out you are stuck with a battery powered pump, and they really can't do the job. I've come up with this vawt powered version that pumps as long as the wind blows. VAWT is over 60 fee...
